Carmen J. Mauriello,Sr.

Carmen Joseph Mauriello Sr., 83, of Exeter, passed away Monday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital following an illness. A beloved husband, father, grandfather and community member, Carmen will be deeply missed by many.

Carmen was born on November 14th, 1942 to Nicholas and Agnes (Hajala) Mauriello of Exeter. He attended high school at Scranton Prep and then earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from King’s College and his master’s degree from Penn State University. He also served in the Pennsylvania National Guard for two years.

In 1967, Carmen married the love of his life, Rita (Botteon) Mauriello, with whom he would enjoy 58 wonderful years. Carmen and Rita were a constant source of love and support for one another, with highlights including a honeymoon in Bermuda, cruises in the Caribbean, and a trip to Italy.

In 1980, the couple had a son, Carmen Mauriello Jr., for whom Carmen Sr. was an extremely attentive, supportive and loving parent. He coached his son’s baseball and soccer teams for years and was always at his son’s side through all of the ups and downs of life, a dependable source of guidance and love. Father and son shared a deep passion for Notre Dame football, attending numerous games together and frequently chatting on the phone about the team’s prospects. A memorable family highlight was Rita and Carmen Sr.’s 2006 trip to Mozambique to visit their son during his Peace Corps service.

Professionally, Carmen worked as a professor of Marketing and Management at King’s College before taking on the position of business manager at Luzerne Intermediate Unit 18. For 25 years, Carmen meticulously managed the finances of numerous programs, such as special education, for area school districts. After retiring, Carmen became a consultant for several local school districts, helping them manage their special education programs.

Carmen had many hobbies and interests, mostly notably golf. As a lifetime charter shareholder member of the Emanon Country Club, he regularly golfed with his friends and as part of various leagues during his retirement years. He would later be elected to the Board of Directors of Emanon, a position he was extremely dedicated to; as the Financial Committee chairperson, he helped the club with key financial decisions.

One of the great joys of Carmen’s life was becoming a father-in-law to Acacia (Stevens) Mauriello and a grandfather to Dashiell, 13, and Dante, 10. He meticulously planned annual family vacations to Ocean City, Md., and Orlando, packing in countless fun and special memories with his beloved family. He and Rita were frequent visitors to his son’s family’s home in Ossining, N.Y., where he greatly enjoyed attending Dash’s baseball games as well as taking Dante out to his favorite diner.

Carmen was also extremely community-minded. In addition to his years coaching youth sports, he also was an active member of his church community at St. Anthony’s Church in Exeter (now part of the Corpus Christi Parish), where he was a member of the parish council. In his earlier years, Carmen was also involved with the Lions Club and was the originator of the annual River Regatta at King’s College.

Carmen is survived by his wife, Rita; son, Carmen; daughter-in-law, Acacia; grandchildren, Dashiell and Dante; sister, Mary Frances Selecky; brother, Joseph Mauriello, and sister-in-law, Cathy Mauriello; and numerous loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Agnes; brother, Nicholas Mauriello Jr.; father-in-law, John Botteon, and mother-in-law, Victoria Botteon; brother-in-law, Robert Botteon, and sister-in-law, Dolores Botteon.

Viewings will be held at Gubbiotti Funeral Home, LLC, 1030 Wyoming Avenue, Exeter on Monday, July 27th from 4:00-6:00 p.m and on Tuesday, July 28th from 8:30-9:15 a.m.

Those attending the funeral mass are asked to go directly to the church on Tuesday morning.

A Mass of Christian burial  will be held on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Church at 224 Memorial Street in Exeter, with Msgr. John J. Sempa, Pastor, presiding. All are welcome to attend.

Interment with Rite of Committal will be in Mount Olivet Roman Catholic Cemetery, Carverton.
