Charles Free Obituary

Charles J. Free, 92, of Kingston, passed away peacefully on Sunday March 8, 2026, with his family by his side.

Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Charles W. and Anna Mamrosh Free.

Charles was a member of St. Monica's Parish, West Wyoming and, while he had lived in Jersey, he graduated from Jersy City State College earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and went on to earn his Master’s Degree.

A proud veteran, Charles honorably served his country with the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War.

Prior to his retirement, Charles was employed by the Jersey City Police Force, attaining the rank of Sergeant.

In the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, Charles played semi-pro baseball for the Jersey City Otto Mack Anchors and received multiple invitations from scouts of the New York Giants Baseball Franchise. Because of his deep devotion to his family, he refused all those offers, not wanting to travel and miss precious time with his wife and children.

In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine Scavone Free, who passed away on November 20, 2016; his son, Richard J. Free, who passed away on September 2, 2025; and his siblings, Joseph, Marie, Joan and Eileen.

Surviving are his son, Michael and his wife, Beverly Free, Spring Brook Twp.; his brother, Robert Free, Florida; his sister, Florence Free, New Jersey; his nieces and nephews; and his longtime companion Marlene Dick.

Charles’s family would like to thank the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Cardiology Team, Commonwealth Health Hospice, and his caregivers, Mary Jo, Jodi, and Corinne, for the exceptional care and compassion they bestowed upon him during his time of need.

Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation on Friday, March 13, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Gubbiotti Funeral Home, LLC, 1030 Wyoming Avenue, Exeter.
