Mary Salerno Obituary

Mary E. Salerno, 94, formerly of West Pittston, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away on Sept. 20, 2022 at the Highland Park Senior Living , Wilkes-Barre Twp., which served as her home for the past 6 years.

Born on Feb. 27, 1928, in Exeter, she was the daughter of the late Dominick Sr, and Josephine Naples Mirra.

In 1948 she married Herman Salerno, a devoted husband, father and grandfather. They resided in West Pittston for 52 years together in the house he built for them before he passed away in 2000. They would have been married 74 years this past August.

Mary worked as a seamstress at MK Dress factory in her early years. She also worked at the former NPW Hospital, Highland Manor Nursing Home and Warren Products throughout her working years.  She retired early to take care of her family.

Mary was best known as a long-time caregiver to her sister, Anna, her mother, father and husband after he became ill. She took care of them for many years before they passed. She selflessly devoted so much of her life to take care of others and gladly put them first.

Mary's favorite hobby was her love of cooking. Born into an Italian family, food, family and gathering around the dinner table was a very important part of her life.  She enjoyed passing recipes to her only daughter, Linda and it became her job to keep the recipes and traditions alive.  The absolute loves of her life were when her 2 grandchildren, Brandon and Ryan were born. Her world revolved around them and they brought her so much joy and happiness.

Her husband, Herman Salerno, brothers, Anthony Mirra, Dominick Mirra, Jr. and sister Anna Mirra preceded her in death.  She will be greatly missed by so many including her daughter and son in law, Linda and Richard Drust, Plains, grandchildren, Brandon, his partner Erin and Ryan Drust, sister in law, nieces, nephews and friends.

A special thank you to Adele Reilly, a longtime friend of the family, who gave so much of her time daily to help the family tremendously through these very difficult months.
To Apryl, Debbie, Melissa and the amazing team from Angelic Paths Hospice Care for bringing comfort to not only Mary but to her daughter as well.
To Highland Park Senior Living by allowing Mary to live out her final days surrounded by her friends and staff she knew and loved.  We're truly grateful for the love, kindness and support given to Mary and her daughter over the past several months.
