Samuel Charles (Dippy) Ferrara peacefully passed away on January 20, 2023, at the age of 89 at the Riverstreet Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation, WIlkes-Barre.
He was preceded in death by his parents Alfonso and Mary (Yencha) Ferrara.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years the former Rosalie (Shoemaker) Ferrara, his two daughters Ann Marie Benson and Allison Wimms along with her husband James Wimms, and granddaughter Hannah (Benson) Viers and her husband Zack Viers.
Sam was a graduate of Pittston Area High School and the Wilkes-Barre School of Business. He retired from the Tobyhanna Army Depot where he worked in Accounting and Finance. He had previously worked for the Wilson Food Company in Scranton until its closing.
Sam was a proud Veteran, having enlisted in the Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in France.
He was a long-term member of the American Legion Post #833 in Exeter, and served as their secretary, historian, and helped place flags at veterans gravesites. He was also a member of the Italian-American Association of Luzerne County for years.
Sam was a devout Catholic having been raised and a member of the former, St. Rocco’s Church, Pittston and later at St. Anthony’s of Padua in Exeter (now St. Barbara’s Parish) for decades. Over the years he volunteered at many church events and picnics.
He was a big Yankees fan and rarely missed a Penn State football game. He enjoyed card games with friends in the Pittston Card Club and treasured outings, walks, and visits with those life-long friends until the end.
The family would like to thank St. Barbara’s Social Concern committee and Visiting Angels (especially Maureen Kacillas) for years of care and compassion. And, most recently, Joseph Krulick of Riverstreet Manor. God bless you all.
Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation on Thursday from 3-6pm at the Gubbiotti Funeral Home, LLC, 1030 Wyoming Ave., Exeter.
A Mass of Christian burial will be on Friday at 10am at St. Barbara Parish in St. Anthony of Padua Church, 224 Memorial St., Exeter. The Rev. Paul McDonnell, O.S.J. will be celebrant.
